Chapter 64 

Anna: 

I don’t remember how long we sat there, me in his arms while he whispered words of comfort to me. But I do remember the moment all anger and agony left my body. It was like my soul was tired of the constant war within. For those few moments, everything felt right, everything felt beautiful. 

When my sobs subsided, I tried to pull away from him only to be firmly pulled back into him, the side of my head lying on his chest separated from his heart by a mere piece of cotton. 

“Five seconds” he muttered. 

I obliged without a thought. I realized it the day he told me I was his mate that when he touches me or is close to me, all my senses stop working, the only thing I can concentrate on Is him. It isn’t fair but this is how I suppose it works for mates. 

Something clicked in me and I frowned. I pressed my ear in concentration and listened. One of my hands crept to his heart and I put the other over my violently beating heart. I gasped in fascination when I realized they were indeed beating in sync. 

I heard a chuckle and with the limited mobility I had, I raised my chin to look up at him. He had a content smile on his face. He opened his closed eyelids when he felt my gaze on him. 

“That’s what calms me down” he said placing his hand over my hand on his chest, engulfing mine completely “Isn’t it fascinating?” he whispered. 

My toes curled in response, “I didn’t know” was all I could say. 

“There’s a lot you do not know” he smiled softly “I think I’ll enjoy watching you as you discover us little by little” 

My eyes traced the stretch of his smile and I felt little pinches like static charge on the tip of my fingers. I was so concentrated on his smile that I didn’t realize Dan had stopped talking a while ago. The hand on my heart rose on its own accord and it didn’t stop until it reached its destination, the bottom of his lips. He held his breath and so did I as I traced the bottom of his mo uth with my thumb. His lip quivered under my touch, he wasn’t smiling anymore. 

I frowned and looked up to meet his dark gaze. No it wasn’t the wolf kind of dark it was still green but with the darkness of a dense forest. With my eyes locked in his own, he pulled me up with a push of the arm he had around me so I was looking at him in the eyes without tilting my head. His gaze travelled down until it stopped at my lips, my hand on his heart fisted his shirt in response. 

His lips once again stretched to form a smirk dragging my attention back to my hand at work. My thumb moved once again over the swell of his bottom lip. One of my fingers accidently hit the dip of the scar on his jaw. My attention snapped to it. I ran my fingers over the thick gash flinching every time I touched the raw flesh. He said nothing as I continued my inspection only the hand on my back moved soothingly making it harder for me to 

concentrate. 

I was about to ask him why he didn’t heal the wound when my gaze fell on something that made my breath hitch and my heart clench, the lone solitaire on my finger. My hand detached from him like it burned at the mere touch of him. I pushed him away with the new resistance that I mustered up. 

“Reanna” he stretched his hand towards me as I stood up. 

“NO” I yelled not recognizing my own voice. 

“We can talk it….” 

“No” I stretched my hands between us to make sure he couldn’t come close to mess up with my head again. I felt tears trailing down my face and quickly turned away from him “Don’t follow me” I started walking away from him “Please” I begged. 

I don’t recall how long I have endlessly walked through the forest but when I could clearly see the bright moon smirking down at me arrogantly, I knew I was closer to home, closer to my husband. 

I was walking the path that led to the house when someone pulled my hand and wrapped his arms around me. I instantly started struggling against his hold. 

“Stay still you du mb little girl” came Eric’s harsh whisper. 

I shook my head twice to make sense of things. I sniffed him. It was indeed Eric and he was currently hugging me like both our lives depended on it. 

“What are you doing?” I tried pushing him again. 

Before he could answer I heard another pair of footsteps come to a halt besides us. This time I was more prepared and so it didn’t take me another moment to recognize my best friend. 

“What the f* ck are you guys doing?” Luc demanded. 

Eric let me go and turned to Luc with a grin “My little brother” he sang dramatically and then proceeded to take Luc in a deadly hug as well. 

Luc pushed him off in almost a moment and scrunched his nose at him. 

“You are nu ts”

“Sammy learned in playschool that today’s hug your family day. I thought I’ll try that on my dear family that I love so much” Eric grinned stu pidly. 

“Don’t. Ever. Repeat. That” Luc huffed and turned his attention to me “Anna, I was coming to…..” He stopped midway and started sniffing the air around me, my eyes widened in fear when I realized what he was getting at “Why do you smell so strongly of the Alpha” he asked in confusion. 

“I….I…. I fumbled. 

“Oops!” Eric chuckled “Big bro must have been the recipient of my affection before Anna here” 

Luc considered Eric’s words for a moment before relaxing “You are unbelievable” he shook his head at Eric’s hopelessness. 

I on the other hand was staring at Eric in shock. He knows doesn’t he? 

“Let’s go” Luc said pulling me with him “Haven’t met Alex in a while” he started to walk towards my house dragging me along. 

I twisted my head to look back as Luc continued to walk. 

Eric was standing at the same place as he watched us walk away. 

‘Go’ He mouthed with an expression that I never thought I would see on him for me. 

It was pity. 

I walked into the house with Luc in tow. Alex was already in. I didn’t realize until now how late it was. It was probably past nine. 

He was sitting on a couch watching ice hockey. 

“You are home” he looked at us with a smile “Hey man” he greeted Luc. 

“Found your wife in another man’s arm” Luc commented lazily as he slumped down next to Alex “Had to drop her off” he snickered playfully not realizing that his words had frozen me at the door. 

Alex laughed “Who’s the man getting killed by my family hitman?” 

Luc snorted “Really? And what about your wife?” 

“What about her” he said as he turned to smile at me. 

“Well what’s the punishment for her?” Luc asked. 

I held my breath as I waited for Alex to respond. 

“Duh! Why would I punish my wife for an assaulter’s fault?” 

“Are you sure it was an assault?” Luc argued. They both do this sometimes; argue about mindless things but today was wasn’t the same as all those times. 

“You think I don’t know my Anna?” Alex raised a confident brow. 

I couldn’t take it anymore so I walked away from them towards my bedroom with an “I’m tired” excuse. 

With quivering hands, I sh ut the door of the room behind me. I managed to walk up to the bathroom and sh ut its door as well. Switching on the shower mechanically, I finally allowed my legs to give away as I slouched down the glass wall of the shower letting the water pour down noisily around me. 

How do I face him now? How do I face the man whose trust I’ve betrayed over and over again? How do I tell him that I’m the last person he should trust? 

I can’t do this. I can’t ever do this. I can’t look at him in the eyes and tell him that the relationship he so trusts in was built on a lie. 

Should I di e? If I d ie, everything will fall to place. I’m the root of everyone’s problems. If I don’t exist, their problems wouldn’t exist either. I will know that my baby will be taken care of, she has a wonderful father. The wolves will have nothing to do either with Alex or my baby. They can get out of this unscratched only if I d ie. Dan will be set free of the bond too. 

I bumped my head against the glass wall continuously to get the ug ly thoughts out of my mind. I shouldn’t be thinking things like this. It’s not good for my baby. 

I wrapped my arms around my bump “Your m om’s a co ward” I cooed softly “I’m sorry I couldn’t be the mother you deserve” A whimper escaped my lips “You saw it today didn’t you? Did you feel my emotions too? I hope you didn’t. I swear I’ll fix it. I swear I wouldn’t let him win” I wiped my tears away “I promise when you arrive, you will have a beautiful family, a complete family. 

Your father loves you so much. You have no idea how excited he is for you. You are lucky that way. You have the best dad in the whole wide world….well second only to my dad perhaps or we can both share the first prize here” I smiled “I am probably luckier in the mother’s department. My m om’s the strongest woman I’ve ever known. She’s going to love you so much. What were we talking about again? Ah your dad” I laughed down at her 

“He’ll seem a little weird in the beginning but I promise you’ll get used to him. I did. For a good three years I thought he was me ntal but he has his charms. With him, you’ll feel like the luckiest person alive. He will only give you happiness. He wouldn’t ever make you cry….. How am I so sure you ask? 

Well before you, I was his favourite woman and he has never once let me shed a drop of tear for him. He has never made me cry…never” the tears I was so eager to keep at bay had returned. 

I’m so tired of this lie I’m living. I’m so tired of this double life I’m leading. 

I closed my eyes. I wish I could forget it all and rest for an Indefinite time surrounded by warmth and serenity. wrapped in the scent of the fresh morning dew on green leaves and something so inexpressibly unique that…… 

My eyes snapped open at that moment
