Chapter 30 Her Loss
Carl did not answer Violet’s question immediately. Instead, he drew her attention to the folder on
his desk. “Don’t you want to see what’s in there?”
Violet approached him skeptically. As she perused its contents, she realized it was a DNA test.
“I collected the samples from you and Whitney,” Carl informed her. His voice was frosty.
“Please! I can explain!” Violet cut in hurriedly. Now that Whitney was involved, she couldn’t help
the sharp fear rising within her. “I can assure you that it’s not what you think.”
Carl sat down expectantly.
Violet considered her options swiftly. If she admitted to Whitney being her daughter, she would
expose Whitney’s lie and, therefore, put her daughter directly in danger.
After all, Whitney had told Carl that she was an orphan when she first approached him.
Carl had always been merciless, especially when it came to those who dared deceive him.
The thought of his ruthlessness was enough for Violet to shoulder the blame entirely in exchange
for Whitney’s safety.
“Whitney and I are indeed related. I’m her uncle,” she began. “You’ve spent a considerable amount
of time with her ever since she showed up on your doorstep, and I’m sure you know how she is by
now.
“Whitney absolutely refuses to budge every time she sets her sights on a man she fancies. Look at
how she clung to you when she first arrived. Look at how she spends her days frolicking with
Mick now.”
Violet paused for a breath.
The halt in her speech was not lost on Carl.
“Go on,” he urged.
Violet peered at him suspiciously. Despite her doubts, she forced herself to continue. “Whitney
was drawn to you from the moment she saw your face. I had no choice but to sneak in undercover
after her. Believe me or not, all I wanted was to save her. I just want to bring her home.”
“None of this means anything to me,” Carl said. There was a subtle threat in his tone.
“Fine.” She sighed. “I am a member of the Novya Guild.”
Carl’s lips curled. He had been right all along, though the knowledge brought him no pleasure nor
satisfaction.
A complex expression crossed his features.
“But,” Violet resumed before he could speak. “This is all a coincidence. In fact, I’m certain those
assassins framed us intentionally to pitch us against one another.”
Her words were firm.
“What evidence do you have to back your claims?” Carl demanded.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake, just use your brain and think about it for a second!“. Violet exclaimed. Then,
after seeing Carl’s darkened expression, she reined in her outburst.
“I was the one who brought those assassins in,” she said in a softer voice. “You’ve seen how much
effort I put into capturing them as well. Besides, I was also the one who engineered their
interrogations.”
If her head weren’t lowered, she would’ve caught the smile on his face.
Of course, Carl had always been aware that Violet’s identity was far from simple. Still, he knew
she had no intention of harming him. Otherwise, he would have dealt with her and Whitney a long
time ago.
“Believe me.” Violet met his eyes with sincerity. “I’m not here to hurt you. I would’ve done it
already if that had been my intention. And yet, I’ve done nothing to you! I just want to bring
Whitney home!”
“You’re still lying.” Carl’s tone seemed to imply that he knew something she didn’t.
Guilt filled her chest, even though she knew she was telling the truth.
Carl stepped toward her and brushed the pad of his thumb against her lips.
How dare she insist that she had done nothing to him? Even now, her, her laugh, and her feigned
loyalty were all he could think of.
Oddly enough, the malicious part of him wanted to punish her for her crimes.
He ducked to kiss her. It was a taste Violet was too familiar with.
Did this mean he believed her, then?
Warmth enveloped her heart, and her eyes fluttered shut. She could make out the indulgence on
Carl’s face through the lids of her eyes.
Yet, something felt off.
Violet jolted out of her daze when she felt his roaming fingers on her chest.
Pushing him away, she wrapped her arms around herself defensively. “When did you find out?”
she demanded, her eyes wide.
He was clearly teasing her just now!
Based on his actions, Violet could tell that Carl must have known she was a woman a long time
ago.
“Take a guess.” Carl smirked.
“You…” Her face turned bright red.
She could never win against him. Not when she was reduced to nothing but a pathetic woman in
front of him.
Violet averted her gaze. Her current focus was on guaranteeing Whitney’s and her own safety.
“There was someone else in the dungeon with me,” she told Carl.
The latter narrowed his eyes. “Who?”
“I don’t know,” she replied honestly. “I only caught a brief glimpse of him. Strangely enough, he
ran deeper into the dungeons after I spotted him. Could there be a hidden exit there?”
Carl furrowed his brows. There was indeed a hidden exit deep within the dungeons. If Violet was
telling the truth, there had to be another traitor in the villa!
“Do you believe me?” Violet asked.
Carl did not reply.
“I will find the evidence to prove my innocence to you. But for the time being, I wish to leave this
place with Whitney now that you’ve blown my cover. You can have my identity card and birth
certificate in return,” she proposed.
“I believe that the mastermind behind all this will strike again soon,” she continued. “Give me a chance to prove my usefulness. Killing me won’t do you any good. As long as I live, you’ll get to exploit me for free labor. Wouldn’t that benefit you more?”
Carl’s expression turned icy. He had no intention of agreeing to Violet’s proposal.
Despite that, Violet rushed back to her room to pack her belongings. She was afraid that she
would never be able to escape afterward if she didn’t leave now.
Back in her room, she lowered her head uneasily. For some reason, being exposed made her feel
uncomfortable.
“Vin!” Whitney barged into her room with Mick. “What’s up?”
“Whitney, my identity has been exposed,” Violet told her daughter in a low voice. “We need to
leave now.”
“I’m not leaving!” Whitney protested. “Let me go explain things to Carl. I can convince him that we
didn’t come here with ill intentions!”
“Don’t.” Violet stopped her before she could leave. “I have enough problems to worry about. He’s not going to listen no matter what you say unless you provide him with concrete proof.”
If he hadn’t ordered their deaths just yet, did that mean he still had a little faith in her? Was that
why he had asked her to gather evidence instead?
Whitney pursed her lips. Her plan of uniting her mother and Carl seemed impossible now.
“Mr. Cooper.” Reed hurried over as well. “Are you leaving? But, why? Mr. Walker has no plans of
punishing you, which means you must be innocent!”
“I’m really not that innocent,” she replied sheepishly. “Hey, Reed, thanks for looking out for me all
this while. I’m going to miss you when I’m gone.”
“Is this the only way?” Reed asked.
Violet lowered her gaze. It would have been better if she’d left on her own instead of being driven
away by Carl.
Mick looked between Whitney and Carl, who was standing by the door.
No one had noticed Carl’s presence. His face was twisted hideously.
Mick just smiled when he noticed Carl’s expression.
In fact, he was certain that both Violet and Whitney would find themselves returning to the villa
before the day was even over.
After she was done packing, Violet left with Whitney.
She had made a lot of friends in the villa, and they all came to see her off.
Carl watched her departure from his bedroom. How had she managed to charm most of his staff
without even trying?
“Carl.” Mick slipped into Carl’s bedroom fluidly.
Carl frowned. He did not wish to be disturbed, especially during this time.
“The villa feels really empty now that Mr. Cooper and Whitney are gone,” Mick said.
Carl remained silent. His eyes rippled as he gazed at Violet and Whitney’s retreating figures.
By the time Violet arrived home, it was almost morning.
She had expected to be ambushed during her journey, but her trip was unexpectedly uneventful.
For some reason, it made her feel a little dejected.
“Gosh, I can finally get a good night’s sleep! I’ve missed this.” Violet inhaled deeply. The freedom
that came with being at home lightened her mood, though she soon launched into a coughing fit.
“Fuck! The amount of dust this place has accumulated!” she exclaimed.
Whitney sat on the bed unhappily. She hadn’t spoken a word on the way home.
“Whitney.” Violet bent down to meet her daughter’s eyes. “It’s always been me and you against the
world, isn’t it? Do you not want to return to the good old times we once shared?”
“But I like living in the villa.” Whitney remained stubborn.
Violet scooped her daughter into her arms and consoled her. “The villa might be great, but it’s not
permanent. We could never have stayed there forever.”
Whitney scrunched her nose. Did that mean Violet and Carl would never be together as well?
“Alright, come help Mommy clean up the bedroom. We should both get some sleep,” Violet
Whitney tugged at the bedsheets, dispirited. After a while, she flopped back onto the bed and
fiddled with her nails.
Violet sighed.
It would take some getting used to now that it was just her and Whitney. After growing accustomed to living among a large group of people, the silence seemed unusually jarring.
She wondered what Carl was doing now.
Violet sat down on the bed as well. She simply couldn’t be bothered to tidy up the place now.
Initially, she had been grateful to leave the villa, but now, she found herself missing it.
What was more, she hated herself for constantly thinking about him.
Sleep evaded both Whitney and Violet that night. They exchanged a few words before pretending
to close their eyes. Despite that, neither of them could fall asleep.
“It’s probably best to get up. You haven’t seen Mr. Kaplan in a while, have you?” Violet said
eventually.
“But I wanna sleep now.” Whitney whined.
“Alright. How about you get some sleep at home while I pay Mr. Kaplan a visit myself? I’ll be back
in a jiffy.”
“Sure.”
Whitney turned away from Violet after that.
Violet smiled helplessly. She smacked Whitney’s butt as she spoke. “All I wanted was for us to go. back to the way things once were. I want to see you smiling again when I get back, you hear me?”
After that, she left the house for Novya Assassin Agency.
Maverick was at the agency when she arrived.
As she scrambled for cover, Violet wondered what he was doing there. From where she was hiding, she could see him enter the building through the front door.
Violet headed to her personal entrance at the back door and was led directly to Novya.
“To what do I owe the pleasure?” Novya asked as soon as he saw her.
“I’ve been exposed,” she explained flatly. “I think it’s best if you hand me back my identity card
and birth certificate for the time being.”
When she first joined the guild, Novya had given her a set of false identification documents in
exchange for her real ones.
Now, without further prodding, Novya led her through a secret passageway where he returned her
intact documents as promised.
“Be careful,” Violet told him. “I still don’t know the identity of the person intent on destroying our
relationship with Carl.”
“You too,” Novya said softly.
Just then, a voice sounded at the door. “Mr. Kaplan, the second–in–command of the Night Crawlers, Maverick Sharp, is requesting an audience with you.”
Novya met Violet’s gaze once more before she picked up her documents. “Goodbye, Novya,” she whispered.
Before she left, however, Violet glanced at Maverick. She was unsure why he was here.
Yet, she did not linger for long. If it was something important, Novya would inform her about it sooner or later.
As she approached her house, the blare of sirens filled the air. Fire trucks streaked past her, heading toward her residential area.
“What’s going on?” Violet found herself asking.
A helpful resident soon answered her questions. “Apartment 804 in Unit 3 is on fire!”
Violet’s eyes widened.
That was her place!
What the fuck happened while she was gone?
