As was his custom, Old Mr. Jarvis donned a gray cotton-linen shirt and chuckled, “Don’t trouble yourself, let her help herself. She’s no longer a child.”
Old Wade grinned, “Ms. Macclain is finally home for the holidays, let me treat her like a child for a bit.”
Estelle came over with a glass of wine, and laughed, “What child?”
“We were just saying you’re becoming more and more childlike.” Old Mr. Jarvis chuckled.
“Is that a bad thing?” Estelle’s eyes sparkled as she smiled.
“Good, both the old man and I hope that Ms. Macclain stays this way forever!” Old Wade filled a bowl of soup for her.
Estelle took a sip of the soup, Delicious!”
When the dishes were almost ready, Estelle called out to Old Wade, “Old Mr. Wade, you should sit down too.”
“I won’t sit, you and the old man take your time eating, call me if you need anything.” Old Wade smiled kindly and turned to walk away.
Estelle stood up to stop him, “Old Mr. Wade, there are no outsiders here, let’s eat together.”
Old Mr. Jarvis also chimed in, “Wade, you’ve been with the Jarvis family for a lifetime, and you still consider yourself an outsider? Listen to Estelle and sit down.” Old Wade trembled as he turned back, “Old man,

“Aye!” Old Wade responded, carefully sitting on the chair, still looking restrained.

Estelle poured a glass of wine for both of them. Old Wade reached out to stop her, looking terrified, “How could I let Ms. Macclain pour wine for me?” “Wade!” Old Mr. Jarvis grabbed his arm, “You’ve watched Estelle grow up, and you’ve loved her since she was little. It’s only right for her to pour you a drink.” Old Wade’s eyes reddened slightly, “I’d rather Ms. Macclain was still young and didn’t have to do anything for me.”
Old Mr Jarvis laughed, “They’ll all grow up eventually. One day it’ll just be the two of us old men left in this yard, and we should let go of those old rules.
Old Wade grinned heartily, his once-clouded eyes lighting up again, “Ms. Macclain and the others will be back eventually, and I’ll be with you all the way!”
Old Wade quickly raised his glass and downed the wine in one gulp, choking and coughing.
Old Mr. Jarvis couldn’t contain his laughter. “Why are you so thrilled? You’ll have to raise a toast at her wedding as well. Save your excitement for that occasion!” he jested. Estelle frowned, “Grandpa!”
Why bring up marriage all of a sudden?
“What are you calling me for? Didn’t you say you were going to go public with that Lamont family kid after graduation? Don’t forget you two are already married, do you want to date for a few more years like everyone else?” Old Mr. Jarvis snorted, “Get the wedding done as soon as possible, or I’ll go find Jaxon Lamont!”
Jaxon is Jonathan’s father’s name.
