Chapter 481
Carson glanced at the old building and said, “Why do you live here? If you don’t want to live in Charlie’s house, I have a vacant house you can stay in!” Emily quickly replied, “No need, thank you, Carson!”
Carson didn’t say anything, just gently smiled, “Is it convenient to chat upstairs?”
Emily thought for a moment and shook her head, “There’s another girl living with me, sorry!”
“Never mind!” Carson laughed, turned around, went back to the car, and took out two big shopping bags from the trunk, filled with stuff.
He handed it to Emily, “Here, take this upstairs!”
Emily saw that the bag had expensive nourishment and cosmetics. She immediately shook her head, “I don’t want them, Carson. You take them back!”
Carson smiled and said, “It’s just some food and stuff, it’s not worth much. The skincare products were given to me by someone else, and I can’t use them anyway.” Emily continued to shake her head, adamant in her refusal. “I really can’t accept them Give them to your girlfriend instead!”
Carson dismissed Charlie’s words, saying, “Don’t listen to Charlie’s nonsense. I don’t have a girlfriend!”
Not far away, a Rolls–Royce sat parked beneath a tree. Charlie occupied the driver’s seat, observing the exchange between Emily and Carson. He narrowed his eyes, fixating on Emily.
Carson claimed to have feelings for Emily, but Charlie didn’t take it seriously. After all, Carson was notorious for changing girlfriends as frequently as he changed clothes. It was surprising to see Carson actually making an effort this time.
He intervened too much.
He didn’t know if innocent Emily would fall for Carson!
He was a little annoyed, opening half of the window, and lighting a cigarette.
Emily insisted on not accepting the gifts. Carson was getting anxious, “Emily, are you overthinking? I just want to be friends with you. These things really aren’t as valuable as you think!”
Emily was firm. She was grateful that Carson helped her today, but she knew that they were different people and didn’t want to accept his things.
She thought and said bluntly, “Carson, thank you for treating me as a friend, but we are not suitable to be friends. Please don’t contact me in the future.”
Carson looked at her in surprise, “Why?”
“Because a friendship can’t be one–sided. For example, you gave me so many things today, but I can’t give you anything in return. I have no money, and all I can say is thank you, which is worthless.”
Carson paused for a moment, then smiled, “Emily, I didn’t think about you returning anything to me. I don’t need it!”
Emily shook her head, “Always owing you would make me feel uneasy and guilty. I’d either be constantly nervous and insecure or start taking your stuff for granted. Neither of those outcomes is what I want, so it’s better to make things clear from the beginning.”
Carson looked at Emily meaningfully, “So you moved out of Charlie’s house for this?”
“Yes! I’m poor, and we can never be friends. Estelle and I are friends, and we may meet again in the future. If you could say hello to me when we meet, I’d be very grateful for your kindness and affection. But deep connections aren’t necessary!”
Carson admired her self–esteem and calmness. He’d also pursued ordinary girls, and like Emily said, they would quickly come to accept his gifts as a given or even ask for more, becoming greedy. He began to feel disgusted and soon broke up.
If he and Emily ended up like that, he’d rather keep the current beauty and simplicity!
He smiled, “Emily, you’ve convinced me. I’ll respect your thoughts. Being friends is indeed the best choice for us.” Emily smiled happily, “Thank you, Carson!”
Not far away, Charlie watched the two laugh together and felt disappointed. He always thought Emily was a sensible girl, but now it seemed she was nothing special!
He had warned her so much, but she was still smiling because of a few words from Carson. It seemed like she liked him already!
He couldn’t help but get angry, mad that Emily let him down!
