Chapter 429
Courtney nodded and handed the drinks to the three of them with a smile, “How do you
like the taste?”
Emily took a deep breath, “It smells so good.”
“There’s cake today too, I’ll bring it to you guys later.”
Courtney chatted with them briefly and then went back to the kitchen to get things ready.
While the three of them were eating, Emily received a call from Carson. His voice was cheerful, “Emily, are you off work? Come hang out! Charlie and Yvonne are here too.”
Emily looked at Estelle across the table and declined, “Nah, you guys have fun! Estelle and I are having dinner together.”
Carson immediately said, “Perfect! Where are you guys? I’ll come pick you up!”
“Really, it’s not necessary. I have to get up early for work tomorrow. Sorry,” Emily declined again.
Carson laughed, “You don’t have to go to bed this early even if you have work! Want me to have Charlie call you?”
Emily didn’t know how to refuse when he mentioned Charlie.
Jonathan gestured to her from across the table, and Emily immediately handed her phone to him like a hot potato.
“Why are you bothering the girl? You drunk or something?” Jonathan’s voice was mild, not particularly sharp, but it sent chills down one’s spine.
Carson was taken aback and it seemed like he had walked to a quieter place. He laughed, “Jonah, you got it all wrong. Yvonne’s feeling down today, and I thought Emily could come and keep her company because they got along well last time.”
“Get lost!” Jonathan laughed and scolded, “Your excuse sucks!”
Carson chuckled and lowered his voice, “Jonah, are you with Estelle? We’re at Blue Oasis, and I just saw Manley bringing that hot girl from Art Studios, J City into a private room. I think you should bring Estelle here to see that Manley’s a scumbag!”
A trace of darkness flashed in Jonathan’s eyes, and he responded indifferently, “Mhm, got it.”
He hung up the phone and returned it to Emily.
He checked the time, “It’s eight o’clock. Let’s finish eating and then go to Blue Oasis for a bit. I’ll take you guys home before ten, so it won’t affect your plans tomorrow. How’s that?”
Estelle looked at him in surprise, not sure why he suddenly changed his mind.
Jonathan asked, “you don’t wanna go?”
Estelle agreed and asked Emily, “do you?”
Since they were going together, Emily had no objection, “Sure, I wouldn’t have anything to do if I went back anyway.”
After dinner, Jonathan drove the two to Blue Oasis.
Tonight’s gathering was organized by Yvonne, and only close friends like Charlie, Carson, and Josiah were in the private room. Carson wasn’t lying; Yvonne was indeed in a bad mood, having downed two bottles of booze while singing.
Charlie knew a bit about the backstory, it was related to Yvonne’s family.
Yvonne’s mother was initially his father’s mistress. After his father’s wife passed away, Yvonne’s mother brought her, then aged six, to join the Hanson family. At that time, her father already had a son, her half–brother, who was four years older than her.
The Hanson family’s son never accepted Yvonne and her mother. At the age of sixteen, he left home and hadn’t returned since.
His father had been searching for him for years, and the latest news was that his son might be dead.
Over the years, Yvonne’s father grieved for his son and vented his anger on Yvonne’s mother, blaming her for driving his son away and indirectly causing his death.
Yvonne’s mother eventually became disloyal and secretly placed her own family members in the Hanson family’s company. She even quietly transferred some of the family’s assets a few days ago.
Today, the truth came out. Yvonne’s father lost his temper, insisted on a divorce, and kicked Yvonne’s mother out of the house.
Yvonne didn’t feel good after hearing her mother’s grievances from over the years, so she called Charlie and the others to hang out and take her mind off things.
When Estelle and Emily entered the private room, Yvonne was leaning on Charlie’s shoulder, singing with tears in her eyes and a sorrowful voice.
