“Didn’t Murray ever tell you about this?”
“Murray was worried about the kid disturbing me, and his mom shared the same concern, so the child has been staying with other relatives.”
Suddenly, a daring idea popped into Maja’s head, but she realized she had no proof and doubted Zoey would believe her.
“Zoey, go home right now and get a strand of hair from both Murray and the kid.”
At this point, it was clear what she was suggesting.
Zoey sprang up.
“No way, Ms. Pennyfeather, this is not something to joke about.”
Maja took a deep breath, gripping her by the shoulders.

“You’re still an outsider to them. Do you really think Murray’s mom would send her own son away for the sake of a stranger? There’s a big chance this kid is Murray’s. You were Murray’s best choice before, so they didn’t want you to find out. But now that Murray has a better option, they’re not afraid anymore! Zoey, you’re so savvy at work, how can you be so naive in love?”
With that, she dragged Zoey out of the convenience store.
“Just go get the hair samples. It’s not hard for you. We’ll do a paternity test.”
Zoey felt weak all over, unable to say a word.
After a long pause, she croaked, “Ms. Pennyfeather, Murray wouldn’t do something like this.”
“Zoey!”
Maja was getting irritated. “Wake up! We’re just guessing right now. If we’re wrong, great! But we need to find out.”
Maja was an emotionally clear–headed woman, and she felt the need to give other women some advice.
If a man’s family sent away a child to avoid disturbing the girl, there’s a big chance that child was his. No mother would send her child away to a stranger who hasn’t even married into the family yet, unless there’s something wrong with the child’s identity or health.
If it’s a health issue, it’s likely genetic.
Some women may think it’s a sign of how much the man valued them, but it’s actually a deceptive tactic.
Zoey didn’t speak, just rubbing her forehead.
“It’s late now. I’ll bring them tomorrow.”
“Alright, I’ll give you the day off tomorrow.”
“Thanks.”
Maja could see she wasn’t okay and wanted to say more, but Zoey clearly didn’t want to talk. She turned and headed into the house..
Just as she was about to enter, she saw Murray coming out.
“Murray, where are you going?”
“My boss needs me for something; I have to go to the office.”
Zoey glanced at the time. It was nearly 10 p.m., and he was going to the office?
Maja’s words had planted a seed of doubt in her mind. She quickly said, “I’ll come with you. I need to work on some documents on my computer.” Murray’s expression changed instantly. “Zoey, are you still doubting me?”
“No, I just want to be with you, Murray.”
“We’ve known each other for so many years, and you’re doubting me now? Who’s more important in your heart, me or your boss?”
That’s what men do. When they were caught, they got angry, then flipped the question to make the women feel anxious and doubtful..
Zoey fell silent, forcing a smile.
Murray stormed off, not looking back.
Zoey looked up, fighting back tears, then looked outside.
The sky was pitch black, but many lights were still on in the complex.
It was beautiful.
But how did things between her and Murray turn out like this?
Murray drove to Evelyn’s villa. He felt guilty towards Zoey at first, but the sight of the gorgeous villa that he could never afford made that guilt disappear. He sat in the car, thinking for a full minute, before he realized what he wanted.
Having experienced a better world, he couldn’t stay still.
If he really married Zoey, he could already see how his life would turn out.
Next would be marriage, paying off the mortgage together, then having kids and struggling to raise them.
The thought was horrifying.
He took a deep breath, got out of the car, and walked into Evelyn’s villa.
Evelyn had sprayed perfume on herself. The moment she opened the door, she wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Murray, what took you so long?”
Without thinking. Murray wrapped his arms around her waist. He knew what Evelyn had planned tonight, and he felt excited.
Though they had kissed and tried vanous intimacies, they hadn’t actually slept together yet.
Tonight, Evelyn was clearly ready.
