The deal included a part about fruits.
lan chuckled, “Looks pretty good.”
“These oranges are a crowd favorite, especially around Christmas time”
A group of people wandered off into the distance.
Jeff, following behind lan, said nothing. He knew Mr. Raymond didn’t care much for this fruit. Even when he was in Greenfield, he’d always have his fruits special delivered from abroad.
Maja was helping Susan push a small cart. Just before they reached home, Susan couldn’t help but ank
“Maja, if you know the big boss, wasn’t it embarrassing for you to help me push this cart in front of him?”
The cart looked shabby and was used for selling fruits. Olivia constantly criticized her for embarrassing herself at her age.
If Susan were out there earning pennies, Olivia would definitely avoid crossing paths with her when with friends.
Now Susan realized and felt guilty towards Maja.
“Nothing is embarrassing about earning your own money, Mr. Raymond is not that kind of person.”
Susan fell silent.
They turned a few corners into an alleyway, and before entering the house, Maja could hear Leo’s voice from inside.
“Dad, I’m starving: save some food for my mom; let’s eat first.”
Then came Olivia’s voice.
“She’s always out so late, we don’t need her money. She insists on embarrassing herself, I’m afraid to go out with friends in case we bump into hér.”
Susan and Maja could hear everything clearly.
Susan was worried that Maja would get upset again, so she quickly shouted, “Daly, come out, Maja’s back
Daly was preparing dinner. Hearing this, he came out immediately.
Leo froze when he heard Maja was back and dared not go out.
Olivia just snorted, picked up her knife and fork, and started eating.
Daly was helping Susan unload the fruits from the cart, so he told Maja.
“Maja, you go in and sit down, Susan and I will be done soon.”
Maja walked in and saw a brand-new sofa. The old one must have been thrown away.
She turned to Leo, her brow furrowed, “Did you change the sofa?”
Where did Leo get the money?
Leo was a bit scared of Maja. It wasn’t very comfortable when he ran into her in Greenfield.
He didn’t answer. When Daly came in, Maja continued asking.
“The old sofa was still usable, why change it?”
Daly answered quickly, “Leo wanted to change it. He thought it looked dirty. The new one’s nice, don’t you think? It cost 500 dollars.”
“Did Leo pay for it?”
“Where would he get the money? I bought it on credit; we’ll have to pay them back later.”
The Daly family’s relationship with their neighbors had been bad ever since the last incident, they were always talked about whenever they went
out
Maja looked at Leo, her face dark
“You wanted to change the sofa, why didn’t you pay for it? Why let them buy it on credit?”
“Maja, you’re meddling too much in our business! I’ve already written an apology letter, what more do you want?”
Men always think a simple apology letter would solve everything.
Daly and Susan quickly chimed in
“Maja, it’s fine as long as Leo’s back. We just have to pay for the sofa, that’s all. We’re really grateful for what you did last time. Come, sit down, and have dinner. I’ll clean up your room tonight.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Olivia rolled her eyes.
“What do you mean her room? I need that room; I don’t want to share with Leo”
She looked annoyed. Clearly, the two hadn’t made up yet.
Maja felt annoyed just looking at them and had no intention of staying for dinner.
“I’ve already booked a room at the hotel, and I feel a bit sick after the long drive. I won’t be staying for dinner.”
Susan and Daly quickly escorted her to the end of the alley.
“You should have your own thoughts about Leo and Olivia’s situation and save some money for yourselves. Don’t repeat what happened last time. When this house is demolished, and you get the compensation money, buy a bigger house and live a better life.”
Mentioning the past incident, Daly felt embarrassed too. It was all due to his impulsiveness, now, things are awkward with the previous
neighbors.
“Maja, don’t worry, I won’t do it again.”
