Chapter 40 Hard to Fall Asleep

Travis‘ words were like a wake–up call. Harvey and the others underestimated Gemma for a reason, and as her husband, he looked down on her, let alone others!

So she hated him, hated the Summers family, and hated everyone around him!

After Joel left, he didn’t rush to get in the car. Instead, he calmed down in the cold wind before picking up a cigarette. He handed one to Travis. “How did Harvey return to the country? Wasn’t his cousin not allowing him to come back?”

“He said his grandfather’s death anniversary is coming soon. Harvey’s father failed to seize power and was marginalized. These years have been hard, and he needs Ian’s permission to come back. I asked him to come because I wanted your help. We all grew up together. You don’t want him to be out there alone, do you?”

“You can’t even take care of yourself, and you have the energy to worry about the power struggle in the Mason family. You have too much free time.” Joel glanced at him lazily and didn’t want to waste any more words with him.

“Your wife wants a divorce, right? Have you settled the family affairs? You can’t even

handle a woman…”

Travis was speechless, feeling as if his heart had been stabbed. What kind of fake friend was this, purposely poking at his sore spot?

When he got home, Jane saw him and called out cautiously, “Brother.” She looked to Faith for help.

“Joel, Jane is still young and doesn’t know any better. Don’t take it to heart. I’ve already taught her a lesson. The things we’ve lost can be bought again. Don’t ruin the relationship between siblings.”

Joel saw the chicken soup on the table and frowned. Jane quickly went up and said, “Brother, I’m sorry. I’ve been boiling it for a long time. I promise I won’t do it again, and I’ll apologize to you.”

“Write down a list of the things you stole and pay me back in installments until

“Joel, Jane has explained to Grandma. She has forgiven her. Why do you have to do this? You know that your father’s thoughts have been with that woman all these years. If he knows about Jane’s situation, our lives will be even harder.”

Joel remained silent for a moment, picked up the chicken soup on the table, and took a sip. Jane breathed a sigh of relief and exchanged glances with Faith, thinking that the matter was over. However, Joel’s face turned cold again.

“Did you make this yourself?”

“Yes…”

He had tasted the soup that Jane had made before, and it tasted much this. If this bowl was made by her, then what about before?

The taste of a bowl of soup can vary greatly. Joel thought of how Faith and the others. had treated Gemma like a servant, and the anger that he had finally suppressed surged up again. His cold words were like a net that bound Jane. “Write down a list of everything you stole, and make sure none of them are missing. Try it if you dare!”

After speaking, he went upstairs despite the pleas of the mother and daughter, lying. on the empty bed and failing to fall asleep for the first time.

The next day, when he saw that Joel’s face was not good, Brad asked a few concerned questions. Joel didn’t have an appetite, so he didn’t eat breakfast at home. He casually said, “Buy me crispy bacon and runny scrambled eggs. The one that we often get.”

Brad stiffened for a moment, but soon a steaming plate of eggs was placed on Joel’s table. He took a bite and frowned. “Are you sure this is the one we always get?”

“Yes, Boss.”

Joel looked up at his assistant, and Brad said with a stiff smile, “It’s the same restaurant. It’s just that all the takeout you’ve had before was made by your wife.”

“Why didn’t you mention it before?”

“It was what you said. Things that are not important about your wife don’t need to be mentioned. She was afraid that you wouldn’t eat what she cooked and told me not to say anything.”

Brad felt uneasy under his gaze. Joel put down his spoon and said, “Forget it, let’s announce the meeting.”

Strayes Group’s invitation has been delivered to Gemma. The signature “Stephen Quinn” was handwritten, and the flowing regular script looked very comfortable.

Joel’s handwriting was also beautiful, but unlike others, it was aloof and noble. Gemma furrowed her brows. Why did she think of him?
